Dr. Fabrizio Vecchi received the University Degree (Laurea) in electrical engineering from the University of Pisa, Italy, in 1999 and the Ph.D. in Robotics from the University of Genova in 2003. Until May 2013, he has been Post Doctoral Fellow and Research Manager at Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna (SSSA), The BioRobotics Institute, Neuro-Robotics area. He has been also Managing Director of TechnoDeal s.r.l., and President of Fastenica S.R.L. (two spinoff companies of SSSA). During his career he participated in the design and development of human-machine interfaces, biomechatronic prosthetic and robotic hands, passive and active orthoses, flexible sensory skin, and technical assistive devices. His professional expertise regards  Fund raising in the framework of International (EU, ESA), National (MIUR, MAE, MISE), and local (Tuscany Regiona, Bank Fundations) call for proposals, R&D activities in the framework of National and International research projects,  Management of National and International research projects and of the personnel involved in R&D activities, Management of high-tech SMEs, and Management of consultancies on technical due diligences, business modelling, technology transfer, process analysis, and re-organization for public and private institutions

He was the Project, Dissemination and IPR manager of 2 IPs, NEUROBOTICS (FP6-IST-FET-IP) and ARAKNES (FP7-ICT-CH3-IP, www.araknes.org), and the Dissemination and IPR Manager of 1 STREP, EVRYON (FP7-ICT-FET-STREP, www.evryon.eu). In the framework of these projects, he was also responsible for:

  • the dissemination and IPRs management for 34 international partners (16 in NEUROBOTICS,11 in ARAKNES, and 7 in EVRYON)
  • the creation, management and maintenance of 3 international collaborative websites for internal and public dissemination
  • the co-organization of 4 Summer Schools, 5 international workshops, 2 international conferences, 4 special sessions
  • the dissemination and IPR management of more than 150 publications and 10 patents produced by the 3 EU Projects
  • the design and production of project leaflets, posters, and other dissemination materials

The research activities with the SSSA regard different research topics: Rehabilitation Engineering, Cybernetic Hands, Humanoid Robotics, Systems for functional replacements and augmentation, Biomechatronic interfaces, Tactile sensors, Active  and passive exoskeletons, Technical aids, Ambient assisted living and robotic automation in surgical rooms. He is co-author of 12 scientific ISI papers and more than 43 papers in referred conference proceedings, and of 7 national and international patents.

He is member and of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS) and of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology.

He has been the Managing Director of TechnoDeal S.r.l., a spin-off company of SSSA funded in 2000 to offer consulting and management services, and international network of excellence on technical, scientific and economic issues.

He has been the President of Fastenica SRL, a spin-off company of SSSA funded in 2008 to exploit the tactile and pressure sensor technologies (see the Skilsens Technology developed in the framework of the Neuro-Robotics Area.
