Summary: 

The project involves development, validation and clinical validation of methods and systems for telerehabilitation and robot-assisted therapy for different pathologies, including patients with severe neurological impairment (i.e. vegetative state patients), patients with cardiac function problems following ischemic heart disease and cardio-surgery, difficult-to wean patients and patients post acute exacerbations of chronic respiratory disease.

Robotics for neuro-rehabilitation

Development and validation of mechatronic and robotic systems and innovative rehabilitation protocols for persons with neurological impairment (stroke, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson's disease, ...) to be delivered in hospital and at home.

1)   Telemonitoring: validation of remotely controlled advanced system for neurological assessment of patients (EEG. EMG, EP);

2)   Telerehabilitation: development and validation of innovative systems for remotely controlled and supervised rehabilitation treatment (e.g., portable robots, Wii-balance board).

 

Human-machine interaction in respiratory medicine - Bioengineering of respiratory function

Development and validation of advanced biomedical systems for persons with chronic respiratory diseases needing ventilatory support and pulmonary rehabilitation in hospital and at home.

1)   Telecontrol and telemonitoring: development of integrated and automated systems for non-invasive  remote control and monitoring of patients under mechanical ventilation;

2)   Telerehabilitation: development of innovative systems for in- and out-hospital pulmonary rehabilitation provided using telemedicine modality (i.e., remote control and supervision).
